Brad's 2010 Image Stabilization Binoculars Review

Hi, my name is Brad and I have been buying and collecting binoculars for over last 20 years, since I was about 12 years old, when my father and I would use binoculars on hikes and deer hunting trips.

In past few years I've been totally addicted to image stabilization binoculars and personally tested various models of them. I use IS binoculars everywhere, I take them to my son's ball games, I use them for hunting. When we go boating, I find IS binoculars absolutely irreplacable for looking at far off coastal scenery. On all my safari trips I also always carry binoculars with image stabilization.

The idea for this site came when I was looking for a new pair of IS binoculars myself and became frustrated at not only at the lack of information on binoculars on the web, but also the lack of unbiased reviews.

I created this site to give you a honest and upfront review of 5 image stabilization binoculars. I have personally reviewed each on this site and have gone through many online stores seeking the best price and user experience.

I thank you for visiting and hope that my knowledge and experience can help you choose the right model for your needs.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Image Stabilized Binoculars

Image stabilized binoculars are one of the most famous and well known type of binoculars available today. They are used for viewing far off objects either from any stationary point or even from a moving automobile. So, basically, they help in improving the image of the object being viewed by removing the effects of any kind of shaking or vibrations that may disturb the image.

They will also provide us with a much sharper image with less work as compared to any other type of binoculars available. At present, there are three variants of image stabilized binoculars available in the market. These reduce the negative effects induced into images by moving, shaking or any vibration. The three different types that are available today are:

a. Gyro binoculars provide stabilized images with the help of a motor powered gyroscope that has been built into them. The gyroscope is what controls the movement and placing of the prism platform in the binoculars. The resistance provided by these gyro's to vibration is excellent but, then again, just like the Vary angle prismatic types, you need a battery or an external power source to make the motor run. Gyro binoculars are not very compact and also, these are heavy as compared to the Vary angle variety.

b. Vary angle prismatic image stabilized binoculars use prisms controlled by microprocessors to improve the stability of the images being viewed. These microprocessors receive signals from devices called sensors that are placed on them. The good thing about these are that they provide instant image stabilization results; the bad thing is now you start needing batteries for them to work correctly.

c. Cardanic suspension are the third kind available for stabilizing images through binoculars. Now, these are considered to be one of the best varieties since it's pros out weigh the cons. The first good thing about these is that they do not require a battery or a power source to start operating.

The second good thing is that these binoculars, unlike the gyro image stabilized binoculars, they do not weigh a lot and are therefore, compact and easy to handle as well. Now, how the Cardanic suspensions work is by providing a mechanical and suspended prism mechanism.

Although often considered expensive, stabilized binoculars worth every penny and present the only binoculars providing uncompromised steady viewing.
